Discrimination at the World Cup

FIFA will soon be holding meetings regarding discrimination bans in the arenas at the upcoming World Cup. Many athletes have been under racial discrimination for years playing the game of soccer and FIFA is finally stepping up to stop it. At the most recent meeting it has been discussed as an absolute no tolerance racism ban. One of the examples cited in the meeting included one where a player had been hit with bananas and was taunted by using monkey voices in the stands. FIFA to me is finally taking the action that should have been taken within the past few World Cups where racism was a clear issue.

Ebola Outbreak Could Harm Equal Protection for People

The Ebola outbreak in the United States is rapidly increasing every day and could lead to many more cases if the treatment is not taken care of soon. Unfortunately people affected with this disease can soon see their rights start to drop as normal citizens. Some schools have already begun to ban the acceptance of students into their school based on the country they are transferring from for fear of the virus. This completely violates equal protection among people but is it justified? The fear that Ebola can spread throughout the United States is very serious and this type of outbreak can be related to that of the Swine Flu but it is much more deathly. People who have had the virus and are now okay may also be prohibited from gaining certain jobs and getting the fair treatment in these cases. This is a bad case of discrimination amongst many people.

White Like Me

Today in class we watched a documentary called White Like Me by Tim Wise. What I saw in the video were horrific ways of thinking that were projected by many vocal white americans. To me it is amazing and difficult to see negative culture like this alive and well in my generation. This amazes me because of the progress we have made as a country to be able to get back to this low level of thinking. It is difficult on me because I have many friends of other races who undergo this type of treatment every day without even realizing it. The stats do not lie and the fact that many African Americans are so poorly treated for little to no reasoning at all still baffles me. The fact that white people are the majority in almost all benefits and the majority in poverty but still the issue is portrayed as a "black" issue. Being able to see the real life examples rather  than media portrayals really can touch someone in many ways. I hope every student is able to see a depiction of this in ways that our class has been able to see. This would give a better understanding on the issue to many younger people and be able to talk about issues in a non racist issue.

Discrimination Among Practice and Leisure

Dr. Misee Harris has come under a lot of racial discrimination throughout her time at a dental practice and is now receiving more harassment due to wanting to be the first black bachelorette. She was selected as a contestant for the show Bachelor but turned it down in hopes of reaching a bigger goal and getting an opportunity for black woman everywhere. In the practice she was told she had to go to a meeting with all other practitioners due to social media comments she had posted. Once in the meeting it was told that her cartoon she posted was very damaging to everyone in the practice. This cartoon was in response to Michael Brown and many other people in the black community that has been damaged by recent findings in the news. The worst part is that her views had also been brought up by the production crew of the Bachelorette as well and was seen as something they could not pursue. Dr. Harris tried to say that her private life should be kept private but the production crew saw her private life as a public route to rant and therefore it would affect the show and their views on big cases.

My Experience During Mock Trial

During class today my team underwent a mock trial in which we had to argue for the state in how they have already made the right choice. The case we had studied was State V. Mann which although was a low key case back then really made for some good arguments between both teams. The preparation for the case was a big learning experience in my opinion for the whole team because we were able to create arguments based in the 1800s with limited resources seeing as this case was so small.
The day of the case showed a lot of skills that we were able to practice throughout preparation. Our side of the case defending the slave was able to show many arguments that could have been brought up throughout the actual case in the 1800s such as comparing slaves to livestock, the three-fifths law, and economic endurances. Although slaves were not treated like people back then there were still reasons that could see them as humans and should be given birth rights as well as well as not be treated the same as a chair. Being property gives the slave no recognition in any type of law or court whether a case can come up or not. All in all I am really happy with the experience during class and will be able to take many study prep and group work skills from it.

Banks Blocking Out Minorities and Their Rights Through Redlining

Recently I have come across an article that talked about how the Attorney General in New York is now suing Evans Bank due to racial discrimination on the bank’s rights. Evans Bank has been denying more loans and accounts to people in the east side section of Buffalo more than any other bank by what is known as “substantial margins.” The president of Evans Bank, David Nasca, although denying an opportunity at an interview, a statement had been released stating how Evans Bank has not done anything wrong and has complied at all times with the comptroller of currency. The east side of Buffalo is home to more minorities of african american culture and crime rates are higher in this area. This leads many to believe that Evans does not want business going through to that section of the city because it would lead to a downfall in profits. Unfortunately for Evans Bank the study shows that it was not delegated to the east side and rather it has affected many impoverished areas of Buffalo. This is more alarming because it shows how this does not have as much to do based on region but more based on race and not actual socioeconomic factors. The Attorney General is also taking this further by investigating all banks in the region and not solely focusing on Evans Bank alone.
